Supporting the Menopausal Journey: Gentle Therapies That Ease the Transition

Updated: Jul 15, 2025

Menopause is an expected transition in life, but that does not mean it is always easy when it comes. Many women experience a wide range of symptoms such as hot flushes, mood changes, disrupted sleep, brain fog, or joint pain that can impact their daily life. For some, these symptoms are mild. For others, they are exhausting.

Within my practice, I have worked with clients who were navigating this phase of life, and I have seen how holistic support can make a meaningful difference. Whether it is used alongside medical treatments or as standalone strategies, natural therapies like reflexology, acupressure, and myofascial work can ease discomfort and restore balance.

Understanding Menopausal Changes

Hormonal shifts occurring during menopause, especially changes in oestrogen and progesterone, affect everything from body temperature regulation to mood and memory. To add to that the physical changes in the fascia (connective tissue), which can become more rigid with age, and it is thus no surprise that many people start feeling out of sync with their bodies.

That is where holistic therapy can make a difference, to help the body and mind adapt more comfortably.

Reflexology for Menopause

Reflexology works on the principle that specific points on the feet, hands, and face correspond with organs and systems in the body. A gentle stimulation of these areas encourages the body to return to a state of equilibrium.

For menopause, the areas that receive my attention are the reflex zones linked to:

  • The endocrine system (particularly the pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, and ovaries)

  • The nervous system (to support emotional regulation)

  • The digestive system (as hormone shifts often affect gut health)

Clients often report that they sleep better, have fewer episodes of overheating, and a general sense of calm after a session.

Acupressure and Hormonal Balance

Although Acupressure may be less familiar than reflexology, it is a well-established practice rooted in traditional medicine, but without needles. It uses pressure applied to points along the body’s energy meridians (Qi).

Many clients find that these treatments support their resilience, improve their energy levels, and reduce the intensity of the emotional symptoms.

For menopause support, some of the points I focus on are:

  • SP6 (Spleen 6): Supports hormonal balance and emotional well-being

  • KD3 (Kidney 3): Nourishes kidney energy, a key concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine related to aging and hormonal health

  • LI4 (Large Intestine 4): Helps relieve headaches, tension, and overheating

These points are included during in-practice sessions. For those that are easilly accessible they can be taught for gentle use at home.

Myofascial Release for Joint and Muscle Aches

As we get older, our fascia can lose some of its flexibility and create a sense of muscular tightness. A lot of my clients going through menopause are aware of this and often talk about feeling stiff and experiencing joint pain.

Myofascial release is a gentle hands-on technique that helps release tight spots in the muscles and relaxes the fascia. This can lead to better movement and blood flow.

This is what the treatment can do:

- Alleviate pain from tension or past injuries

- Improve your posture and alignment

- Help with headaches, neck tightness, and lower back pain

Many clients find this therapy not just useful for easing discomfort but also for helping them feel more in-tune and at ease with their bodies. (See an explanation of Myofascial therapy)

Emotional Wellness and Menopause

While other therapies and medication may be a necessity for some, touch therapies offer another, often much needed, type of support.

These therapies help to:

  • Lower stress levels

  • Improve emotional resilience

  • A sense of feeling calm and improved stability

In my clients' feedback, they often report that after their sessions they feel more grounded, clearer in their thoughts, and emotionally steady.

What a Session Looks Like

There are three individual modalities that I provide for Menopause Support, each is a seperate one and can be combined over three seperate sessions. This also allows for the client to select which one is more appropriate for them at the time of booking. I have found that creating a fusion of these therapies is very disorientating and disruptive for the clients.

I usually begin with a full reflexology treatment to support internal balance and settle the nervous system.

The therapy session after that which, for example could be an acupressure session, is done only after a minimum of 3 to 4 days after the previous one. This is totally dependant on the client's needs and choice.

If the client feels that there is any joint or muscle tension, a myofascial therapy can be chosen for this.

These independant, gentle and supporting therapies can each provide its own individual benefits, while avoiding any possibility of over stimulation. It respects the client's own individual needs and the body’s natural pace of the physical changes taking place.

Holistic therapies are all complimentory to medical therapies, they can offer some relief, ease the transitional symptoms, and provide help in experiencing a better day-by-day feeling of wellbeing.
