Lomi Lomi and Indian Head Massage – Rhythms of the Nervous System

Updated: Jul 30, 2025

Indian Head Massage and Lomi Lomi are two traditions that come from opposite sides of the world.

Indian Head Massage was developed in India and is deeply rooted in the ancient healing system of Ayurveda, which dates back over three thousand years. Originally known as Champi, head massage was a daily practice within families, passed down through generations as a way to support health, sleep, and mental clarity. It was, and still is, believed to balance prana, or life energy, by releasing tension from the head, neck, and shoulders.

Lomi Lomi, by contrast, comes from the Hawaiian islands. It was practised by the kahuna, the traditional healers of Hawaii, as a form of physical, emotional, and spiritual cleansing. The long, flowing strokes reflect the rhythm of the ocean waves and connect deeply to the land, water, wind, fire, and Hawaiian cultural wisdom. Traditionally, it was used before important life transitions or ceremonies, bringing harmony to body, mind, and spirit.

Although these practices evolved in very different cultures, they share an understanding that healing is not only physical but also emotional and spiritual. Both therapies use rhythm, flow, and nurturing touch to restore balance. They remind us that human connection and presence are as important as technique.

I chose to learn both because they reflect the two ends of my own healing path. They give structure to my beliefs about how care should feel: safe, slow, and respectful.

They also offer a way to work with people who may not yet be ready for deep fascial work but still need to feel change in a way that honours the body’s pace.

Reiki can be gently integrated into both practices where it feels appropriate. Sometimes it is woven into the flow of the massage, and sometimes it is offered in stillness at the end. It always comes with permission and presence, adding a quiet layer of energetic support to the physical treatment.

Both Lomi Lomi and Indian Head Massage invite the body to soften. They support emotional ease and physical grounding. They remind us that healing does not always need to come from something physical. Sometimes it comes from rhythm, care, and a connection that honours both the body and the traditions that shaped these therapies.
