Lomi Lomi: A Healing Tradition Rooted in Ancient Hawaiian Wisdom

Lomi Lomi is more than a massage technique.

It is a healing philosophy which was passed down through generations of Hawaiian kahunas (healers). At its heart lies the concept of mana, the life force that flows through all living things. Similar to chi, prana, or lomi, mana reflects  the vitality, balance, and connection with nature.

Maintaining mana involves living in harmony with your environment, with actions, thoughts, and experiences that uplift the spirit and body. When you live with balance, or pono, you enhance your energy level and ability for healing.

What is Lomi Lomi?

It is a traditional Hawaiian massage that carries more than just a technique. It is rooted in an intrinsic and sacred philosophy of life, healing, and connection. The words “Lomi Lomi” mean to knead, to rub, or to soothe. When it is repeated twice, the meaning deepens. It mirrors the layered, flowing, and nurturing nature of the massage, honouring both the body and the spirit. Lomi Lomi seeks to restore this balance.

Traditionally Lomi Lomi is performed with prayer (pule) and deep intention, it was never just about physical touch. Lomi Lomi was performed only by kahunas, Hawaiian healers, often within ritual, prayer (pule), and chant. Kahunas would often begin with a period of consultation, seeking the root of discomfort, whether emotional, physical, or spiritual, before any physical treatment began. They recognised that healing involves the whole person. Even today, it remains a practice of deep presence, intention, and respect.

The Hawaiian people saw health not as the absence of illness but as harmony with nature, spirit, and community. They believed that everything in the universe, including people, animals, ocean, wind, and trees, shared the same life force, or mana. To live well was to live pono, in the right balance with this energy. Lomi Lomi was a way to restore that balance when it was lost.

Inspired by the natural elements, especially the ocean, the massage uses long, sweeping strokes that resemble rolling waves. These movements are not just relaxing. They are a physical prayer. A silent invitation for the body to release, for the heart to soften, and for the mind to return to the present moment.

What is the massage experience?

The treatment itself is a flowing, rhythmic experience.

Using forearms and hands, the practitioner performs long, sweeping strokes across the body in a continuous motion that brings relaxation and renewal. Sessions may include prayer, breath work, and visualisation, anchoring the experience in presence and connection.

In the practice of Lomi Lomi today, the session is always tailored to each individual.

The client’s comfort and privacy are prioritised, whether the massage is performed over a towel or directly on the skin with appropriate draping. The intention remains the same: to reconnect the receiver with their body, their energy, and their deeper sense of peace.

Lomi Lomi is often described as a physical expression of Aloha, the spirit of love, compassion, and respect.

To give Lomi Lomi is to honour the receiver's journey and offer them space to return to themselves. It is a sacred pause in a busy world, allowing the body to let go, the heart to open, and the spirit to rest
